Education in Spain: features, cost, tips

Many Ukrainian graduates are thinking about the prospect of entering higher educational establishments. However, some of them do not know which country to choose. Ukrainians are also concerned about the number of documents that need to be collected and translated. This article will focus on the specifics of higher education in Spain and the subtleties that should be known when collecting documents for admission.

Important reasons to become a Spanish student

Spain is a European country with remarkable climatic conditions, azure seas and access to the ocean. It is a country with a rich cultural heritage and beautiful architecture. In addition, Spain is the educational center of Europe. Every year more and more young people from different countries come to get higher education there. Studying in this country has a number of advantages:

  • Spanish diplomas do not require confirmation, as they are made on the European model;
  • two "waves" of entrance exams - in June and September. If an applicant did not pass the summer exams, he can try his hand in autumn;
  • in Spain, there are universities founded in XIII-XV centuries (the University of Salamanca prepares qualified specialists since 1218, the University of Barcelona was opened in 1450, and Complutense – in 1499);
  • relatively low cost of studying (1-5 thousand EUR per year in state and 6 000 – 15 000 EUR in private higher educational establishments);
  • studying is conducted in two languages: Spanish and English;
  • the ability to combine work with study. The law allows part-time work (20 hours a week).

Specifics of the education system and life of students

An applicant who has reached the age of eighteen can enter a Spanish higher educational establishment. One year of study is equal to two semesters, the first semester lasts from September to December, and the second - from January to March.

Higher education consists of three parts: bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees. The process of knowledge assessment is connected with credit-unit system. To go to the next course, you must collect at least 60 credits. As a result, future bachelors study for 3-4 years and gain 240 credits or more. To become a master, you should get knowledge for another year or two and get at least 120 credits. In order to become a doctor of science, you need to work for another 3-5 years.

Most of the studying is in Spanish, but there are teachers who speak to students in English.

Usually, state higher educational establishments focus on theoretical knowledge, while private educational institutions offer students practical tasks. Oral exams are more common than written exams. Course projects and graduation work are what teachers focus on. Foreign students cannot be an off-campus student.

Studying in Spain, students are there on the basis of a student visa. Foreigners live in the university dormitories or rented apartments. There is also an option to live in a guest family, i.e. to live in a room that is rented out by Spaniards in their apartments.

Preparation of documentation

On the website of a chosen educational institution, you need to specify which documents are requested. Usually they are a certificate of completed secondary education and a report card for three years of study. If we are talking about entering the master's program, you must submit a diploma and an addendum to it, in which there are all your marks. Sometimes a certificate confirming knowledge of English or Spanish is requested. Also, questionnaire (motivational letter, essay) of the applicant should be submitted to the university.
